On Saturday 20th October 2018 at 7.45pm, I’m going to be on the bill at Duke’s Comedy Club, which is a bi-annual comedy night in Ipswich, at The New Wolseley Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP1 2AS.
Billed as “An evening with the finest comics from around the world”, the night always boasts an impressive line-up of professional comedians, and there might even be people off the telly! I’m not allowed to tell you who it is (line-up is subject to change) but I do know…and they are both great!
There will be an MC and a opener, a middle and a headliner. You’ll be able to watch me for 20 minutes as the ‘middle’ and I’ll be doing my trademark songs and banter as I start to create my new solo show, Angelic.
This is an exciting step up for me, as it is a 400-seater theatre and looks set to sell out. Tickets range from £10 – £24 and are nearly sold out so I’m hoping it’s going to be an enthusiastic crowd!
I’ve already done ‘paid 20’s’ as they call it on the circuit, and I’ve even headlined so this sits really well with where I am right now. I do after-dinner entertainment at conferences and of course work as a funny keynote speaker and MC so larger crowds are very familiar.
I still go to open mic nights, but not as much now and when I do, I am generally looking for quick progression from them, so that I’m then billed on a night with more experienced professionals, even if it’s still unpaid.
The key to all this, like anything, is meeting the right people. It’s very much ‘who you know’, although you must of course, have the requisite talent to go with it. It’s noticeable that I’ve been sharing a stage with more named comics lately: Stephen K Amos, Imran Yusef, Nathan Cassidy, Carly Smallman and now the ones I can’t name that will be at the Ipswich gig.
It feels like this is taking off, right on time.
I set myself a 7-year plan for comedy and so far it’s on track! It ends with a debut solo show in Edinburgh in 2020 and from there I will make another one!
So if you live in Suffolk e.g. Ipswich or Bury St Edmunds or Norfolk e.g Norwich or in that posh place known as Cambridge, come on down to Duke’s!
Anyway, that’s enough excitement for one day. I’ve just bought a new electro-ukulele for the gig and I need to learn how to play it….tea, coffee, coffee, coffee…
